Showtime Documentary films recently announced that Martin Scorsese will be directing a feature documentary about the legendary frontman of New York Dolls, David Johansen.

To be co-directed with David Tedeschi, who has previously worked with Scorsese on documentary films such as Shine a Light and No Direction Home. The documentary will take a look at Johansen growing up in Staten Island and him arriving in New York's East Village in the late sixties when he was a teenager. The doco explores Johansen's time with New York Dolls and goes into his time spent with his alter-ego Buster Poindexter and time in the nineties with Harry Smiths.

Scorsese tells Rolling Stone “I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been a touchstone ever since I listened to the Dolls when I was making Mean Streets. Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City. I often see him perform, and over the years I’ve gotten to know the depth of his musical inspirations. After seeing his show last year at the Café Carlyle, I knew I had to film it because it was so extraordinary to see the evolution of his life and his musical talent in such an intimate setting. For me, the show captured the true emotional potential of a live musical experience.”

It hasn't been said if it will go into Johansen's acting career or his personal love life, but it would be interesting to see how the story is told.
